Ford Brody, a Navy bomb expert, has just reunited with his family in San Francisco when he is forced to go to Japan to help his estranged father, Joe. Soon, both men are swept up in an escalating crisis when Godzilla, King of the Monsters, arises from the sea to combat malevolent adversaries that threaten the survival of humanity. The creatures leave colossal destruction in their wake, as they make their way toward their final battleground: San Francisco.

The ship successfully makes the return voyage, but the crew realizes that twenty thousand years have passed, with Earth's ecosystem having evolved to become centered around Godzilla.

Originally released in Japan as "The Return of Godzilla" in 1984, this is the heavily re-edited, re-titled "Godzilla 1985". Adding in new footage of Raymond Burr, this 16th Godzilla film ignores all previous sequels and serves as a direct follow-up to the 1956 "Godzilla King of the Monsters", which also featured scenes with Burr edited into 1954's "Godzilla". This film restores the darker tone of the original, as we witness the nuclear destruction of giant lizard terrorizing Japan.
The film is a re-edited Italian-language dubbed version of Godzilla featuring 80 minutes of footage from the original Gojira (1954) and the US version Godzilla, King of the Monsters! (1956) plus 25 minutes of WWII newsreel footage and clips from other monster 1950's movies. The re-edited film was then colorized via a process called Spectorama 70 consisting of applying various colored gels to the black and white footage. The film also features a new music score composed by musician Vince Tempera (under the pseudonym Magnetic System).

An unusually large number of tie-in toys were produced for this series by Bandai toys, because this series was, in fact, created through the use of action figures. A CD of theme music, mostly composed by Akira Ifukube was released in 1997 by Polygram entitled 'Welcome To Godzilla Island'. In 2007, a 4-disc DVD set including every episode of the show was released in Japan at a price of 16000 yen.
