It was produced by production company Capricorn Programmes for London Weekend Television who syndicated the programme to a variety of countries. Local broadcasters were sent scripts and given the option to re-voice programme content if required. Though initially successful, the show was gradually dropped by most regions until it was only being shown in Northern Ireland by the local contractor UTV. It also included reviews of new games systems, video game creators and conventions/shows. A short-lived spin-off magazine was also produced.

The Movie Show was a half-hour weekly Irish television series which served as RTÉ's flagship movie review show. First broadcast in 1993 until September 2001, it was presented by Dave Fanning, who was amongst the many people outraged when the show was axed. Movie companies were also said to be distressed at its axing. Fanning criticised RTÉ's management, who never once consulted with him before making their decision, and said the axing of the show was "ludicrous" and "outrageous". He implied that RTÉ ought to produce a programme that reviews movies as it is seen as cheap and the interviews are paid for by the movie companies themselves. Fanning insisted that it had been "a very cheap programme and we were always under budget". The Movie Show was touted as returning in 2002. The Movie Show is the working title of a new film review series for the 2012/2013 season on RTÉ. The series will run for 16 episodes, each of 25 minutes duration.

Saturday Night at the Movies was a weekly television series on TVOntario, the public educational television network in Ontario, Canada. The series presented classic movies, followed by interviews and feature segments with directors, actors and other people involved in making the films presented. The show was initially formatted in this way due to requirements that all programming shown on TVO needed to contain educational elements, which was usually accomplished by including interviews and analysis of the programming. Nevertheless, even after these requirements were dropped, the format was maintained; all told, the series presented almost 1,500 films and over 1,000 interviews. First aired on March 30, 1974, the program was originally hosted by Elwy Yost. The first film shown was Ingmar Bergman's Through a Glass Darkly. During Yost's 25-year tenure as host, he showed a wide variety of foreign films, but tended to concentrate on Hollywood-produced films from the 1930s through the 1970s. In the late 1990s, the Progressive Conservative government of Mike Harris appointed Isabel Bassett as chair of TVOntario, with a mandate to refocus the network's broadcast schedule more clearly on education. Although there was some concern that the network would lose Saturday Night at the Movies, its highest-rated program, Bassett instead negotiated an agreement with York University to include the series in its film studies curriculum.
